2026 Guest Speaker Evening

The Society is pleased to announce the first Guest Speaker of the year will be Max “Mackie” Machlin talking on the Menora Picture Gardens and Theatre at the Forrest Park Croquet Club on Monday 23 February 2026.

The Menora Picture Gardens outdoor cinema at 340 Walcott Street was built by Max’s father, Abraham Machlin, and it opened with a seating capacity of 1,100 on 18th January 1947 to a packed house. The Menora Theatre was then built after Abrahim’s death by Max and his two brothers Jack and Amos, making them possibly the youngest cinema owners in WA at the time. It opened on 20th May 1954 with the Samuel Goldwyn production of “Hans Christian Anderson” starring Danny Kaye.

This is an amazing opportunity to hear first hand the story of the Menora Picture Gardens and Theatre from Max, don’t miss it!
